Event: October 7, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, during a meeting in Belgrade with students of the Faculty of Philology, stated that the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 was conducted to protect the civilian population and to overthrow the country’s president, Slobodan Milošević.

Stoltenberg, in particular, told the Serbian youth that NATO is a defensive organization that does not attack anyone. As for the 1999 bombings, the NATO Secretary General said that he understood that “in Serbia, many still treat these attacks badly, but this was done in order to protect civilians and stop the Milošević regime.” But the most important thing that Stoltenberg called for is “to look into the future.”

Alexander Vučic stated: “I had long negotiations with Stoltenberg, we talked about all types of cooperation between Serbia and NATO. We paid special attention to Kosovo and Metohija and to the role of KFOR [International Mission under the auspices of NATO in Kosovo and Metohija] and I many times I asked him not to reduce the mission in Kosovo. If there is a need, in a very short time, in a few minutes we will contact and be able to solve the problem immediately, we will be able to explain what is happening in the region and help protect the population.” The cooperation between Serbia and NATO is gaining momentum, and the question of joining the Alliance can be raised in 5-10 years. Montenegro, which was part of Yugoslavia in 1999, already belongs to NATO.
